To Record

Step 1: Set up

1.

Connect the source device to your sound card (most likely “line-in”).

2.

Adjust the volume on the source device to a comfortable listening level. If it's too loud, you will experience distortion on the recording, too soft and there will be a lot of background noise.

3.

Adjust the recording volume level in MC. See the "Volume setting" section in the "Line-in recording tips" section.

4.

Position the source material just before the first track.

5.

Step 2: Media Center adjustments

1.

Select the Record icon button on the toolbar or go to Tools | more Tools | Record Sound

2.

If you like, enter the album name and/or the artist name. You may also click the Tracks button and enter all the track names. If you are connected to the internet, you can use the "Search internet" feature to grab track names for almost any cassette or LP you are recording. Or you can just accept the default names and rename the tracks later.

3.

Go to Options | Encoding and select Encoding for: “Sound Recorder”. Choose the encoding type and quality. These settings will be saved, so you only have to set them once, unless you want to change them. See Encoding Settings for details.

4.

Select File Naming & Location (under Options) and take not of or change the file locations. You can also set the file naming rules. See File Naming & Location for details.

5.

Select Recorder Settings (under Options) and select your Recording Source (probably “line-in”). See Recorder Settings for details about the other options.

6.

Start the source device and then click the Start button.

When the end of the source material is reached, the recording will end, if track splitting is enabled..

Click the Stop button to end the recording session.

Click Exit to close the recording dialog box.

Your file will be placed in the "Recently Imported" Playlist. You can edit, rename, or move the file to the directory of your choice from here.

Keep an eye on your free disk space. Since sound files use about 10 MB of disk space per minute, leaving the recorder running for a long time can take up a lot of disk space. You may want to limit the maximum length of a recorded file. See Recorder Settings.
